The lion's distinctive mane starts to grow when the cub is about one year old but does not fully develop until they are three to four years old.

The mane of the Asiatic lion differs from that of their African cousins in that it is usually shorter in length around the head but is more pronounced along the chest, as is shown by Sabu - pictured here aged five.
